SlideShare is the world's largest community for sharing slideshow presentations (like those usually made with Microsoft PowerPoint) and PDF files on the web.

Individuals & organizations upload presentations to share their ideas, connect with others, and generate leads for their businesses. Anyone can find presentations on any topic that interests them. From very serious ones to the hilariously funny, or presentations that spread the word about a cause, like climate-change to ones that showcase someone's photographic skills.

The slideshows on the site can be tagged, downloaded, or embeded into your own blogs & websites.

SlideShare is the best way to get your slides out there on the web, so your ideas can be found and shared by a wide audience. Do you want to get the word out about your new product or service? Would you like an easier way to share your holiday snaps with your friends and family online? Are you a teacher looking to share your lesson plans? It only takes a moment - start uploading now, and let your slides do the talking!

Some of the things you can do on SlideShare:

Embed slideshows into your own blog or website.

Share slideshows publicly or privately (there are several ways to share privately).

Synch audio to your slides.

Market your own event on slideshare.

Join groups to connect with SlideShare members who share your interests.

Download the original PowerPoint / Pdf file.

To give you just a small example of the kind of slideshows you'll find on the SlideShare website, below are a few that I have created and uploaded myself. They are best viewed in full-screen mode and any of the links in the slides can be clicked to open in a new tab/window. Use the forward and backward buttons to navigate through each slideshow and when you've finished watching one, you can choose another from the list below the slides. Enjoy...

Instead of making a phone call, writing a letter or taking a trip down to your Local Counil, FixMyStreet allows you to file a report directly from your computer. Thus eliminating all of the usual hassles and time constraints associated with reporting a problem via the normal channels.

Once you have filed a report, this service will alert you via e-mail as to when your Local Council has received the report and again when the problem has been fixed.

I personally think this is a great service, because after all, we pay our Local Councils enough of our hard earned money to keep our streets safe and clean and this site unables people to get their money's worth from them by taking some proactive action.

I typed in 'SW18' and 'SW10' (both London postcodes) and was quickly racing from Wandsworth to the heart of Chealsea, taking in all of the familiar sites of where I used to live. Try it... it's great!!!

Here is the definition of the word 'Grill' that I found on the site...

Meanings of grill:

Teeth

A gold/diamond plate that is molded for your teeth. It is decorated with diamonds and/or gold. Usually worn by rappers, Nelly, Paul Wall, Mike Jones and many others.

I was highly confused, so I had to find somewhere to look it up and I found this site. I think this site is also handy for monitoring the slang coming out of your children’s mouths. My mom wouldn’t let us use slang around the house. We always had to speak perfect English. I am extremely grateful that she did, because It made me better able to communicate.

There are several ways to surf this site. The easiest way is to type in the word you want to define in the dictionary, like I did. Put in the term you want to define and click the search button.

Or, you can go through alphabetically, A-Z, and browse slang words by letter. Or you can click Random at the very end of the A to Z listing and get a random word. There are also random listings that change on the main page.

You can even add your own slang terms to the site if a search for the word turns up nothing.

I wouldn’t want my children using a lot of this terminology, that is for sure. Another warning that I just noticed: some of the examples do have profanity in them, so I wouldn’t recommend showing this site to kids.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/

Update: 14/06/2008

I submitted the word iBanter to the Urban Dictionary, as I run a few sites called that, and it has now been approved, listed and it's definition is available to view here. If you'd like to add it to your own blog or website, then click on the 'Get Widget' button below it.

Widgets of this sort are a really great way of engaging and keeping in contact with your readers, by offering them a way of keeping up-to-date with all of your latest posts, by letting them add the widget to their own websites and blogs.

What's unique about WidgetBox, is that anyone who adds your widget to their site can make all the changes they need to the widget to make it fit their site's design - like changing the size or colours - without affecting the original widget. Why not try it by clicking on the ''Get Widget' button at the bottom of my one above.

WidgetBox also has a very large community of members who may rate and comment on your widget and who also may become new readers of your blog once they discover it.

To use your own WidgetBox widgets here in your blog's side-bar, you'll first have to enable one of the 'HTML Modules' in your blog's design wizard (HTML modules are not available in group blogs) and add the code for your widget in that.

It's called the 'Newspaper Clipping Generator' and it allows you to add your own peice of text to an image that looks like a snippit clipped out of a newspaper.

One very good use I can think of for it, apart from it just being a fun way to add more interest to your website page or blog post, is to use it for adding interesting looking pull-quotes to your pages.

This is what Clipmarks says:

Like scissors for web pages, Clipmarks lets you capture the specific content on a web page that you want others to see.

Once you've clipped something, you can share it anywhere on the web, including Facebook, your blog, by email or on clipmarks.com. learn more

There are lots of things you can do with your clips:

Save them on Clipmarks.com Your clips can be saved publicly for others to learn from or be entertained by, or you can make them private. Either way you've got a fully searchable collection of great things you find on the web.

Post them directly to your blog Clipmarks offers direct integration with wordpress, blogger, typepad, live journal and other blogging platforms, enabling you to post anything you clip from a web page directly to your blog. demo

Email them to friends Straight from any web page you can clip and email something you want friends, family or co-workers to see. demo

Print them Don't waste paper or get annoyed trying to copy and paste to a Word document. Use clipmarks to easily print only the parts of the page you want.

Here's a clip that I made by clipping a demo video and some more infomation about Clipmarks:

Instead of linking to entire web pages, Clipmarks lets you clip exactly what you want others to see. Our browser add-on lets you save and share what you're reading on the web with greater precision than is possible with links. There are lots of things you can do with your clips:

Clipmarks also gives each user a widget for their clips that can be embedded on MySpace, your blog or just about anywhere else. You can also use our Facebook application to share what you clip with your friends. Lastly, there’s a great community over at clipmarks.com where people share and discuss interesting things they clip from the web. Feel free to see what other’s are clipping, add your two cents and start posting clips you think others would enjoy.

Consider using a third-party image hosting site - like PhotoBucket - instead.

I've come across a really good image hosting site, that allows you to upload, store and share an unlimited amount of images, with no file-size, bandwidth or time restrictions and is totally FREE too.

The site is called 'iBanter Photo Pimp' and it also allows you to add some really cool effects to your photos and images if you want to - like silly hats, big noses, funny teeth and various bling items, etc.

To give you an example, you can turn a photo like this one:

What's more, there's a social element to the site too, which allows other people to rate and pimp your photos. Remember, it's FREE, so just go ahead and have some fun with it by clicking here...

But no matter how attractive you think your images are, they always tend to look a little bit flat on the page, don't you think.

Well not any more...

I came across this great site just the other day, called Polaroize, that gives you the power to make all of your images so much more interesting. It does it by adding an effect that makes them appear as though they are somehow completely seperate from the page itself and are sitting on, or floating above, it.

Here's an example below of a really boring (but also very sexy) photo of myself, as I would have normally added it to a blog post or web page in the past:

And below is exactly the same photo, except that I have edited it using the Polaroize website:

I'm sure you'll agree with me, that the second photo looks much more interesting than the first one... and yet the only changes the Polaroize website made to the image, was to add a white border, slightly rotate the image to the left and then add a drop-shadow to it - all with just a couple of clicks of my mouse. Now it kind of looks like a photo taken with a Polaroid camera, don't you think.

It's so easy to create this effect for your own images using the Polaroize website. Simply click here (or click on the image above) to go to the Polaroize website now. Then click on the 'Browse' button to select an image from your computer and then hit the 'Upload' button to generate your new image. Once your new image appears on your screen, right-click on it and choose 'Save Image As' to save it to your computer. Viola... how easy was that!!!

What do you think of the Polaroize website? I'd really like to know. Will you be using it yourself, or not? If you do decide to use it to spruce up your blog/website, then why not pop a link in a comment so we can see what you've done. Do you know of any other sites that let you do cool stuff with your images? If so, then please share them with us!
